Chyleuze ascites heeft verscheidene oorzaken, waaronder chirurgie. Het presenteert zich vaak als pijnloze abdominale distensie en er is nog geen definitief behandelingsalgoritme ontwikkeld. Dit is het eerste artikel dat chyleuze ascites na neoadjuvante chemoradiatie en laparoscopische totale mesorectale excisie beschrijft.

De overleving van patiënten met een lokaal uitgebreid rectumcarcinoom na een optimale lokale behandeling wordt hoofdzakelijk bepaald door het optreden van metastasen op afstand. In tegenstelling tot het coloncarcinoom laat adjuvante chemotherapie bij het rectumcarcinoom geen verbetering in overleving zien.1 De ‘Rectal cancer And Pre-operative Induction therapy followed by Dedicated Operation’ (RAPIDO)-studie onderzoekt of kortdurende bestraling gevolgd door langdurige chemotherapie vóór de operatie de overleving van deze patiëntengroep kan verbeteren.
